The mayor also shared a heartwarming story of citizens’ voluntary participation during the heavy snowfall this winter, saying, “On the snowy day, thanks to the voluntary snow removal work by the neighborhood leaders of Sinjang 2-dong using tractors to ensure the safety of Sinjang High School students, the students were able to commute safely without any danger.” He expressed gratitude, adding, “Such precious hearts and cooperation from our citizens make Hanam a warmer and more livable city.”
Regarding urban development, he revealed a future vision to solve long-awaited projects one by one, such as the Camp Colbern development and the undergrounding project in the old downtown area, and to do his best in attracting corporate investments, creating K-Star World, and addressing major issues in the new town, aiming to make Hanam the best city in South Korea.
He also introduced new public facilities set to open across Hanam in 2025. In the old downtown area, the Deokpung Sports and Culture Center will fully open in March 2025; in Gam-il New Town, the Gam-il Complex Community Center is scheduled to open in August 2025; in Misa Riverside City, the Misa 3-dong Public Complex Building is expected to open in the second half of 2025; and in Wirye New Town, the Wirye Complex Sports Facility is planned to open in the first quarter of 2026.
In the education sector, he shared the current status of remodeling Wirye Forest Elementary School (4 classrooms), expanding Shinwoo Elementary School (18 classrooms), and the establishment of the tentatively named Misa 5 Middle School and Misa 4 High School to alleviate overcrowded classes.
Special attention was also given to protecting children’s safety. Hanam City plans to improve the Seobu Elementary School child protection zone by consulting with Seobu Elementary School and holding a parents’ meeting in February to promote the maintenance of pedestrian fences and traffic safety facilities.
Lastly, he introduced various changes under the ‘2025 System Changes,’ including real-time waiting status information and ticketing services at civil service counters, the opening of Gam-il Library, expansion of the ‘Visiting Childcare Support Service’ at the Comprehensive Childcare Support Center (including the operation of a Gam-il pickup station for the Toy Library), and the operation of the Misa Senior Welfare Center.
Additionally, at the meeting, citizen representatives presented diverse opinions such as measures to revitalize the Misa Riverside City commercial district potentially affected by the construction of a large complex shopping mall in Gangdong-gu (Hyun Gyo-tae, Chairman of the Residents’ Autonomy Council), installation of restrooms at the Gam-il Retention Basin sports facilities (Park Jin-cheol, Chairman of the Gam-il Residents’ Autonomy Council), and plans to preserve Sangok Elementary School, which faces closure due to declining student numbers (Han Man-jung, leader of the Cheonhyeon-dong neighborhood leaders).
Hanam City stated that it will carefully review citizens’ proposals and continuously share progress on their implementation.
Meanwhile, the ‘Citizen Participation Weekly Meeting’ is held quarterly to move away from government-centered meetings and directly listen to diverse citizen voices to reflect them in city administration. About 140 people attended the meeting, including citizen representatives such as Yoon Tae-hyun, head of the Policy Monitoring Group; Hyun Gyo-tae, chairman of the Residents’ Autonomy Council; Jang Se-jin, chairman of the Hanam City Veterans Council; Yoon Mi-ae, chairwoman of the Gyeonggi-do Women’s Organization Council Hanam Branch; and senior officials of Hanam City.
