Yeongju-si Promotes Urban Planning Road Construction from Gahung New Town to Tax Office Intersection

Expectations for Traffic Dispersion with the Construction of Roads and Bridges Connecting Old Downtown and New Town

Yeongju City in Gyeongbuk Province is promoting the construction of an urban planning road connecting Gaheung New Town and the Tax Office Intersection to alleviate traffic congestion and establish a smooth urban traffic network.

Currently, there are four bridges crossing Seocheon Stream: Seocheon Bridge, Yeongju Bridge, Gaheung Bridge, and Gaheung 2 Bridge. In particular, Yeongju Bridge and Gaheung Bridge serve as major access routes for Gaheung New Town, causing severe congestion during peak commuting hours.

This project is being promoted to resolve the continuously increasing traffic volume following the development of Gaheung Residential Area and to mitigate additional traffic congestion expected from the supply of LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation) Gaheung public-supported private rental apartments.

The project section spans a total length of 1.06 km from Gaheung New Town to the Tax Office Intersection (road width 20 m, one bridge of 260 m, four lanes in both directions).

Among these, the section from Hanjeolma to the Tax Office Intersection (Section 1, L=520 m) is scheduled to be completed first by the end of 2027, while the section from Gaheung New Town to Hanjeolma (Section 2, Gaheung-dong, L=540 m) will proceed with road construction after the urban planning facility decision is made when the LH supply promotion district is lifted.

Upon completion of this road construction, traffic volume around Yeongju Bridge and Gaheung Bridge will be dispersed, greatly improving traffic flow within the city center. It is also expected to promote the revitalization of the old downtown area and have a positive impact on balanced regional development.

Additionally, a residents’ briefing session was held on the 11th at the Yeongju 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center meeting room to explain the basic and detailed design services and to collect residents’ opinions.

Mayor Park Nam-seo stated, “This road construction project is an important infrastructure connecting the old downtown and the new town, and it is expected to greatly contribute not only to alleviating traffic congestion but also to balanced regional development. We plan to actively reflect various opinions through the residents’ briefing session, so we ask for your interest and cooperation.”
