People Power Party at 42.8%, Democratic Party at 40.8%

Regarding the nature of the upcoming presidential election, the ruling party's public opinion for regime continuation and the opposition's call for regime change are closely matched within the margin of error. In the progressive camp, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, ranked first, while in the conservative camp, Kim Moon-soo, Minister of Employment and Labor, took the top spot.


According to a poll conducted by Realmeter on the 9th (commissioned by Energy Economy Newspaper, targeting 1,002 nationwide respondents aged 18 and over, with 97% wireless and 3% wired responses using automated ARS method, response rate 8.4%, and a sampling error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level), the preference for the next presidential ruling power showed that the opinion for "regime change by the opposition" rose by 0.1 percentage points to 49.2%, while "regime continuation by the ruling party" fell by 0.8 percentage points to 45.2%. The difference between the two opinions is 4.0 percentage points, within the margin of error.

Regarding the nature of regime change, although the call for regime change led beyond the margin of error only in the second week of January, the gap has since narrowed to a slight difference for three consecutive times (including the four weeks covering the Lunar New Year holiday).


In party support, the People Power Party dropped by 2.6 percentage points to 42.8%, and the Democratic Party fell by 0.9 percentage points to 40.8%. The gap between the two parties narrowed from 3.7 percentage points to 2.0 percentage points, continuing a close race within the margin of error for two weeks.


A suitability survey for the next presidential candidates from both the progressive and conservative camps was also conducted.


In the progressive camp, Lee Jae-myung led overwhelmingly with 40.8%. He was followed by Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province (7.7%), Kim Boo-kyum, former Prime Minister (6.5%), Lee Nak-yeon, former Prime Minister (6.0%), Kim Kyung-soo, former Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do (4.5%), and Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly (3.5%).


In the conservative camp, Minister Kim ranked first with 25.1%. He was followed by former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min (11.1%), Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (10.3%), Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo (7.5%), former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon (7.4%), and People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo (5.1%). Lee Jun-seok, a Reform New Party lawmaker who recently officially declared his candidacy and is classified as a conservative candidate, had a support rate of 4.0%.
