Massachusetts Medical School Endowed Professor
Presents "The Mystery of Gene Regulation"
DGIST (President Geonwoo Lee) announced that Professor Victor Ambros, the 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine, will give a lecture at the 27th Distinguished Lecture Series (hereinafter ‘DLS’) to be held on the 10th.
Professor Victor Ambros, the speaker of the 27th DLS, is a world-renowned life scientist currently serving as the Silverman Professor of Natural Sciences Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in the United States. He was selected as the 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine and is well known as a pioneer in microRNA (miRNA) research.
Professor Ambros earned his Bachelor’s degree (1975) and Ph.D. (1979) in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has conducted research and education at Harvard University and Dartmouth Medical School. He is currently conducting research and teaching at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. He has received numerous awards, including the 2008 Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research and the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In this lecture, Professor Ambros will present on the topic of “Genes and Molecular Mechanisms Controlling Animal Development.” He plans to explain that microRNAs (miRNAs), first discovered in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), regulate gene expression without protein synthesis and play an important role in animal growth and tissue maintenance. Additionally, he will introduce the process of exploring the principles of animal development and growth based on research using experimental models to elucidate the gene regulatory mechanisms of microRNAs (miRNAs).
DGIST President Geonwoo Lee said, “The DLS lectures are an important opportunity to share the latest research achievements of world-class scholars and researchers and to promote academic exchange,” adding, “We hope this lecture will serve as a chance for DGIST researchers and students to seek innovative research directions.”
He added, “Going forward, DGIST plans to continuously hold DLS lectures inviting top researchers to strengthen convergence research capabilities and nurture global scientific talents.”
Meanwhile, DGIST hosts DLS lectures by inviting Nobel laureates and world-renowned scholars to share top-level research achievements and activate academic exchange. Through this, DGIST fosters a creative and challenging research culture, strengthens convergence research capabilities, and contributes to nurturing global scientific talents.
