Drainage Improvement Planned
for Flood-Prone Areas During the Rainy Season
Hampyeong County in Jeonnam announced on the 6th that the Singye District (Eomdamyeon and Hakgyomyeon) has been selected as a target area for the '2025 Drainage Improvement Project Basic Survey' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The Singye District is an area that experiences flooding every year during the rainy season due to rising water levels in Eomdacheon and Hampyeongcheon streams and insufficient drainage channels. Farmers in the region have consistently voiced difficulties in cultivating crops.
To resolve these issues for local farmers, the county has continuously appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Jeonnam Provincial Government regarding the necessity of this project. As a result, it has been selected as a basic survey area for drainage improvement this year and will receive full project funding (8 billion KRW).
The drainage improvement project aims to minimize crop damage and prepare for disasters in advance by installing drainage stations, sluice gates, and drainage channels in low-lying farmlands that repeatedly suffer flood damage due to heavy rainfall caused by climate change.
The county plans to gather input from residents of the Singye District and consult with experts to carry out improvements in a total area of 178 hectares, including Singye, Songno, and Seongcheon-ri in Eomdamyeon and Hakgyo and Gokchang-ri in Hakgyomyeon. The project will include the construction of one drainage station, 9.7 kilometers of drainage channels, and farmland reclamation, with a total budget of 8 billion KRW.
County Governor Lee Sangik stated, "This drainage improvement project will be of great help in preventing flood damage and ensuring stable farming activities for our farmers," and added, "We will continue to identify areas in need of drainage improvement to address the difficulties faced by farms affected by flooding and work to resolve these issues."
