Pam Bondi, Attorney General and close aide to President Donald Trump, launched a retaliation against the Department of Justice and its subordinate Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from her first day in office. This has realized the concerns that were raised since she was nominated as Attorney General.

The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 5th (local time) that Bondi ordered the creation of an internal body to investigate "public officials who weaponized the judicial system for political motives" during her inauguration ceremony that day. It is interpreted as an intention to investigate prosecutors who indicted President Trump on various charges during the Joe Biden administration and FBI agents involved in investigations such as raids.

Although specific investigation plans were not disclosed, Attorney General Bondi mentioned Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney, Letitia James, New York State Attorney General, and Jack Smith, former special counsel, as investigation targets. District Attorney Bragg indicted President Trump on charges of paying hush money to cover up a sexual scandal and manipulating accounting books, and Attorney General James filed a civil lawsuit related to allegations of asset value manipulation by the Trump Organization. Former Special Counsel Smith indicted President Trump on charges including attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election results and leaking classified documents.

Additionally, Bondi signed an administrative order warning that prosecutors opposing President Trump would be effectively expelled from the organization. The order instructs them to resign if they do not faithfully implement President Trump's policy goals.

Bondi has been a controversial figure regarding her qualifications since she was nominated as Attorney General. This is because there were doubts about whether she, as a close aide, would maintain independence when President Trump suggested retaliation against the Department of Justice, claiming he was targeted during the Biden administration. In fact, Bondi appeared on Fox News in 2023 and, using the term "Deep State," referring to the entrenched federal government establishment, said, "Prosecutors belonging to the Department of Justice will be indicted."

Emil Bove, Deputy Attorney General and the second-in-command at the Department of Justice, also publicly criticized Brian Driscoll, Acting Director of the FBI, in a memo sent to all FBI agents that day, accusing him of disobeying his orders. Deputy Attorney General Bove had ordered the submission of a list of agents who investigated supporters of President Trump during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, but Acting Director Driscoll reportedly resisted, stating that even if he left the FBI, he could not submit the list of subordinate agents. Bove explained that the reason for ordering the submission of the list of agents who investigated the Capitol riot was "to examine whether certain FBI agents had ethical issues or procedural violations."

Meanwhile, at the inauguration ceremony held at the White House that day, Attorney General Bondi said, "I will not disappoint President Trump."
