Listening to Industry Impact and Policy Suggestions Following the Emergence of DeepSeek
Yoo Sang-im, Minister of Science and ICT, visited the AI Industry Convergence Complex located in Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 6th to inspect the operation status of the Gwangju AI (Artificial Intelligence) Data Center and held an on-site meeting with excellent AI companies based in the region.
At the meeting, Minister Yoo stated, “We will support regional AI research and development infrastructure so that AI companies can secure competitiveness and grow in good environments even in local areas, and actively communicate to ensure that artificial intelligence contributes to regional development.” He added, “In the rapidly changing AI era, national capabilities must be united to leap forward as one of the top three global AI powers, and the potential of artificial intelligence must be actively utilized in local communities as well.”
The Gwangju AI Data Center, essential for AI, established high-performance AI accelerators and opened in October 2023. It has been providing computing resources to startups and venture companies to conduct AI research and development as well as AI product and service development.
On this day, Minister Yoo also held an on-site meeting with AI companies located in the Gwangju region. Seven excellent AI venture and startup companies from Gwangju, including a company that started locally and succeeded in overseas expansion and won the '2025 CES Innovation Award,' attended the meeting.
During the meeting, they shared success stories of regional industry and AI convergence through AI infrastructure at the AI Convergence Complex and various AI company support, as well as achievements in developing innovative products and services. They also listened to field opinions such as difficulties faced by local AI companies and policy proposals.
Additionally, opinions from AI companies were discussed regarding the high-performance, low-cost open-source AI model recently developed by the Chinese AI startup ‘DeepSeek,’ which has caused a worldwide sensation.
