Sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, this award evaluates outstanding policies and achievements of local governments responding to an aging society. This year, 6 institutions were selected as excellent institutions among 226 local governments nationwide.
Last May, the city was recognized for its policy excellence by joining the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities. WHO presents eight major guidelines including housing, transportation, employment, and social participation, and certifies cities that meet these criteria as age-friendly cities.
The city has received positive responses by operating various age-friendly policies especially in housing and transportation sectors, such as on-site repair services for single elderly households, the Love House consignment project, operating Happy Taxi to support transportation-vulnerable groups, and additional designation of senior protection zones.
In addition, the city plans to promote a total of 55 elderly welfare projects over three years, including running senior activity programs centered on senior welfare centers and supporting the revitalization of senior citizen centers’ programs.
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin City, said, "We are leading sustainable age-friendly policies and building a welfare system where seniors can enjoy a healthy and comfortable old age," adding, "We will continue to strive to create an age-friendly city where all generations are respected and live harmoniously."
Meanwhile, the Korea Healthy Age-Friendly City Policy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Press Center on the 19th.
