Suwon City Population '1.28 Million' by 2040... Establishing Basic Urban Plan

The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province is set to grow into a city with a population of 1.28 million by 2040.


On the 5th, Gyeonggi Province gave final approval to the ‘2040 Suwon Urban Master Plan (Draft)’.


The 2040 Suwon Urban Master Plan is the highest-level long-term comprehensive development plan that outlines the future and development direction of Suwon City.


In this plan, Suwon City set the target population for 2040 at 1.28 million, considering various development projects, redevelopment of aging planned urban areas, and population projections from the National Statistical Office.


Additionally, out of the total administrative area of Suwon City, 121.09㎢, 5.711㎢ has been designated as planned urbanization land in preparation for future urban development. Existing development areas of 56.835㎢ are designated as urbanized land, and the remaining 58.544㎢ as conservation land, finalizing the land use plan.


The spatial structure was reorganized from the existing 1 central city, 5 sub-centers, and 1 regional center to 1 central city and 5 sub-centers to ensure flexibility in urban growth, future orientation, balanced development, and the realization of a carbon-neutral city, while enabling systematic management.

The living zones are divided into six areas: North Suwon, West Suwon, South Suwon, Gwanggyo, Hwaseong, and Yeongtong. Each zone includes development strategies such as creating cultural complex content spaces, implementing eco-friendly smart cities, aiming for advanced self-sufficient cities, and improving aging residential environments.


The transportation plan reflects road and railway plans presented in higher-level plans such as the national railway network plan, and proposes expansion of public transportation and eco-friendly transportation means for carbon neutrality, as well as the establishment of a smart city-based transportation system aligned with the city’s future vision.


Park Hyun-seok, Director of the Urban Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "With the approval of the 2040 Suwon Urban Master Plan and the ‘North Suwon Techno Valley’ project promoted by Gyeonggi Province, we will establish the Gyeonggi Opportunity Town and the Southern Gyeonggi AI Knowledge Industry Belt." He added, "By utilizing spaces and human resources tailored to the characteristics of each university, this will serve as an opportunity to strengthen Suwon City’s urban self-sustainability and lay the foundation for sustainable urban growth."
