"Resolving 'Screen Addiction' Is the Top Priority"
Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, President of T?rkiye, mentioned age restrictions for access as a measure to prevent the side effects of excessive immersion in social networking services (SNS).
On the 3rd (local time), local media including the daily H?rriyet reported that President Erdo?an stated at an event held in Istanbul that addressing the 'screen addiction' that has spread through society like an epidemic is a top priority.
He emphasized that we must not neglect our children amid the chaotic atmosphere of digital media, saying, "We cannot just stand by and watch the minds of young people being corroded under the guise of freedom."
Earlier, Abdulkadir Uralo?lu, Minister of Transport of T?rkiye, the department responsible for social media, said in a recent media interview, "I believe children under the age of 16 should not access social media." He added, "(To access SNS) one must be of an age where they can make decisions independently based on objective criteria."
The Turkish government often restricts access to SNS on security grounds when terrorism or natural disasters occur. In August last year, Instagram access was blocked for about a week amid controversy over censorship of posts supporting the Palestinian armed group Hamas.
