A Man in His 40s Booked for Comment on Jeon Han-gil's YouTube Video
Says "It Was a Joke"... Turned Himself In After Police Investigation Began
The author of a comment implying a bomb attack on a YouTube video by Korean history lecturer Jeon Han-gil has turned himself in. It appears he felt pressured when the police launched an investigation.
On the 4th, the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency announced that they had booked a man in his 40s who wrote a comment on Jeon's YouTube video stating that he was "preparing a homemade bomb."
The man reportedly told the police, "The comment was posted as a joke," and claimed, "I do not agree with Jeon Han-gil's statements."
Earlier, on the 1st, Jeon uploaded a video of an "anti-impeachment" rally held at Busan Station Square to his YouTube channel.
In this video, a commenter wrote around 11 p.m. on the 3rd, "I am preparing a homemade bomb," adding, "I sat down crying at Teacher Jeon Han-gil's words about wiping them out. I will dedicate my 20 years of life, whether short or long."
Following this, a report about the comment was filed with the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency, and when the police began investigating, the man reportedly felt pressured and turned himself in.
Meanwhile, in July 2022, a post implying a terror attack against President Yoon Seok-yeol appeared on a domestic internet portal site, stating, "(Bullets) six left." The man in his 40s who posted it eventually turned himself in to the police after media coverage about him intensified.
