Public officials in Nam-gu, Gwangju (District Mayor Kim Byungnae) are taking the lead in promoting a culture of filial piety by providing administrative services together with senior citizens.
According to Nam-gu on the 3rd, district office officials held a "February Nam-gu Family Communication and Empathy Day" event in the 8th-floor main conference room, where they participated in a pledge ceremony to practice filial piety.
This event was organized to spread a beautiful culture of filial piety in which public officials take the initiative to be with seniors, amid concerns that the value of filial duty is gradually being lost.
About 300 public officials who participated in the event delivered a written pledge to Mayor Kim Byungnae, promising to implement five actions, including running district administration to enhance the happiness and convenience of seniors and providing administrative services that care for and serve parents.
Employees who were unable to attend the pledge ceremony due to reasons such as handling civil affairs will hold their own pledge events in each department by the 7th, reaffirming their commitment to filial administration. In addition, Nam-gu plans to deliver the written pledges, containing the public officials' promises to practice filial administration, directly to senior citizens in the community.
The joint New Year's bow ceremony, which began in 2023 and is now in its third year, will be held at the Nam-gu Multipurpose Gymnasium. About 400 people, including senior citizens, are expected to attend, and Mayor Kim Byungnae will deliver the pledge of commitment to filial administration to the head of the Nam-gu branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association on behalf of the public officials.
A district official stated, "Since the complete revision of the 'Ordinance on the Promotion and Support of Filial Piety' in the first year of the 8th popularly elected administration, we have been implementing various policies to promote filial piety," adding, "We will continue to take the lead in encouraging a culture of filial duty so that Nam-gu can become the top city for filial piety in Korea."
