Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon strongly urged the establishment of export breakwaters, the appointment of an economic plenipotentiary ambassador, and the preparation of supplementary budgets, stating that a tariff war has begun due to U.S. President Trump’s additional tariffs on China and others.
On the 3rd, Governor Kim posted on his social media (SNS), "The tariff war we feared has begun," adding, "The United States has imposed additional tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, and the counterpart countries are retaliating with counter-tariffs."
He continued, "This is a ‘fire on the stove’ that was forewarned, and our export companies are immediately facing an emergency," and added, "I proposed the immediate activation of the ‘Trump 2nd Term Emergency Response System’ last January, and I urge it once again."
He then proposed ▲the establishment of export breakwaters ▲the prompt appointment of an economic plenipotentiary ambassador through ruling-opposition-government consensus ▲and the preparation of supplementary budgets.
Governor Kim further stated, "Acting Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok hastily ordered an assessment of the impact on our companies," and lamented, "It is a clear dereliction of duty by the government for not responding swiftly to a predictable situation."
He also warned, "We must now respond with extraordinary resolve," adding, "If we fail to respond in time, South Korea may disappear from the world economic map."
In particular, he advised, "Now is not the time for ruling, opposition, and government to engage in power struggles," and urged, "We must unite and swiftly carry out all possible measures."
