Proposed Themed Spaces Harmonizing with the Environment Draw Attention
A 1.48 million square meter public garden with various themed spaces will be created in the Dongtan New Town area of Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province.
Hwaseong City announced on the 3rd that the winning design for the Eastern Region Public Garden Project, part of the 'Botanic Garden Hwaseong' initiative, was selected as 'Botanica Sanctuary' submitted by the consortium of landscaping office Saramgwa Namu Co., Ltd. and Dohwa Engineering Co., Ltd.

This project is being promoted by Hwaseong City to establish the eastern region base of 'Botanic Garden Hwaseong,' including the Yeoul Park exhibition greenhouse. The core of the project is to renovate four key parks in the eastern region into public gardens combining plant-themed exhibition, experience, and education programs, and to build a garden belt connecting them.
The target area covers 1,478,609 square meters around Yeoul Park, Jaramo Park, Nojak Park (Banseoksan), and Keunjaebong Park, excluding the section in collaboration with Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), and a 7.9 km garden belt connecting these sites.
A total of nine entries were submitted for the design competition held since November last year, and the city explained that 'Botanica Sanctuary' was selected as the winning work for presenting an evolving model of public gardens that reflects changes in citizens' lifestyles and the uniqueness of 'botanic.'
The winning design proposed 'Belvedere 360°' as a landmark element, utilizing the terrain difference in the center of Yeoul Park to enjoy the Banseoksan landscape from multiple angles while enabling indoor community activities. Along with this, themed spaces matching the environment of the sites, such as the Banseoksan wetland garden, were proposed to offer unique green leisure programs and places exclusive to Hwaseong City.

The winning team will be granted the rights for basic and detailed design. The city plans to sign a contract with the winning company within this month, complete the design service by the end of the year, and start construction next year.
Jung Myung-geun, Mayor of Hwaseong City, said, "This competition has laid the groundwork for establishing the eastern region base of 'Botanic Garden Hwaseong.' We will create a 'Botanic Garden Hwaseong' that citizens can enjoy and be satisfied with in their daily lives by thoroughly collecting opinions throughout the design process to realize a differentiated public garden unique to Hwaseong City."
