19.8 MW of Electricity Generated per Hour
Enough to Power 55,000 Households for One Year
A hydrogen fuel cell power plant with a power generation capacity of 19.8 MW per hour has officially started operation in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province.
Hwaseong City announced on the 3rd that the first phase of commercial operation has begun at the hydrogen fuel cell power plant "Hwaseong Yanggam Fuel Cell," built in Songsan-ri, Yanggam-myeon.

This power plant project was promoted through a joint business development agreement in April 2023 between the city, Korea Plant Service, SK Ecoplant, and Samchully. The project involves constructing a 40 MW-class hydrogen fuel cell power plant in two phases on 20,107㎡ of city-owned land located in Songsan-ri, Yanggam-myeon. The first phase of construction began in January last year, and the plant started operation about a year later.
The generated power is 19.8 MW per hour, with an annual production of 166.5 GW. This amount is enough to supply approximately 55,000 households in Hwaseong City for one year. The produced electricity will be sold to Korea Electric Power Corporation at a fixed price for the next 20 years and then supplied as eco-friendly power to Hwaseong City.
The city explained that upon completion of the second phase, eco-friendly power will be supplied to about 93,000 households, and an annual reduction of 230,000 tons of carbon dioxide is expected compared to thermal power generation.
Jung Myung-geun, Mayor of Hwaseong City, stated, "We will spare no administrative support to ensure the safe completion of the power plant through the second phase," and added, "We will take the lead in creating a carbon-neutral society by expanding eco-friendly renewable energy."
