277 Illegal Advertisements Removed
Signboard Improvement Project to Continue This Year
Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) announced on the 2nd that it has successfully completed the ‘2024 Signboard Improvement Project’ initiated last year, refurbishing the signboards of 140 stores along Majang-ro in Hakdong and Dongho-ro 7-gil to Dasan-ro 8-gil in Yaksu-dong.
The district supported up to 3 million KRW per store to replace old and illegal signboards with designs reflecting the characteristics of the area and the stores.
The kitchen furniture street in Hwanghak-dong was previously marred by large protruding signboards and deteriorated facilities that impaired the urban landscape. However, through this project, signboards of a total of 97 stores were replaced, improving the street’s appearance.
The section from Dongho-ro 7-gil to Dasan-ro 8-gil in Yaksu-dong is the entrance to Yaksu Market, connected to Namsan Town Apartments, the largest apartment complex in Jung-gu. It is a commercial area with frequent resident traffic, and before the improvements, old signboards were removed to create a pleasant street environment.
Alongside the signboard improvement project, illegal advertisements were also cleaned up. A total of 277 illegal advertisements, including protruding signboards and large wall advertisements, were removed, transforming the overall street into a neat appearance.
Jung-gu explained that close communication with residents was the foundation for the success of this project. Officials and production companies visited each store to hold ‘visiting briefings’ to encourage store owners’ participation, and carefully reflected the owners’ requests during the signboard design selection process. They also maintained steady communication by promptly resolving complaints arising during the process.
Since starting the signboard improvement project in 2008, the district has replaced a total of 4,720 signboards across 39 sections. Additionally, it has produced and distributed a signboard design book for outdoor advertising businesses to support the creation of beautiful advertisements in compliance with regulations.
The district plans to continue the signboard improvement project this year as well. It also intends to establish a systematic maintenance system for the replaced signboards and strengthen monitoring of illegal advertisements to continuously maintain a clean street environment.
Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “This is a meaningful achievement that has transformed the urban landscape into a pleasant environment based on communication and cooperation with residents,” adding, “I hope the improved signboards will help revitalize the local economy amid difficult economic conditions.”
