Chonnam National University announced on the 13th that the Yeosu Studies Institute held the 6th Yeosu Studies Forum under the theme of "Fragment Research on the Yeosu Incident for Truth Investigation."
The academic conference, held on the 9th at the Joint Lecture Room of the Industry-Academia Research Building at Chonnam National University Yeosu Campus, was attended by about 150 people, including members of the Yeosu Incident Bereaved Families Association and related organizations.
Hyun Hyekyung, Associate Research Fellow at the Jeju Research Institute, who participated in the forum, presented on the topic "Discrepancies in Family Relationship Registers and the Recovery Process Due to the Jeju 4.3 Incident," stating, "At the request of the Jeju 4.3 Bereaved Families Association, an investigation into 78 individuals with discrepancies in their family relationship registers found that most were listed as collateral relatives instead of direct descendants, or as unrelated individuals with no blood ties indicated."
She continued, "Because of this, actual bereaved family members had their rights to recover from the damages infringed upon. The issue of discrepancies in family relationship registers is not unique to Jeju but is also evident in incidents such as the Yeosu Incident and the Nogeunri Incident. Properly restoring family relationships distorted by state violence in the process of addressing and recovering from historical injustices is a process of remedying the most fundamental human rights violations."
Kwon Osu, Professor at Sunchon National University, stated, "Attempts to clarify the role of the US military in research related to the Yeosu Incident have been quite insufficient," adding, "However, immediately after the Yeosu Incident, the US Military Command in Korea led the suppression operation through the temporary military advisory group to conceal their involvement. Furthermore, the temporary military advisory group used the suppression operation as an opportunity to train the Joseon Constabulary and themselves to enhance their operational capabilities in preparation for the withdrawal of US forces from Korea."
Song Eunjeong, Doctor of Literature, in her presentation titled "The Literary Elements and Value of Narrativizing Experiential Memory: Focusing on the Yeosu 10.19 Testimonies," emphasized, "For the narrator, the act of speaking serves a healing function and realizes communication between the narrator and the listener. Such oral narratives, transmitted orally, expand individual experiential memories into universal narratives, thereby strengthening their literary significance."
She further stated, "The literary value and status of the oral narratives of Yeosu 10.19 experiential memories will become more firmly established as they are expanded into collective memory through the process of oral transmission."
