Yeongdeungpo-gu Leads in Child Abuse Prevention and Protection... One Step Closer to a Child-Friendly City

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it is leading efforts to create a safe and healthy child-friendly city by promoting various projects for the prevention and protection against child abuse.

The district prioritizes the safety and rights of children, making comprehensive efforts from prevention to response, and is strengthening the child protection system within the local community.

In particular, the district emphasized that the key to preventing child abuse lies in the active interest and participation of local residents, and is actively conducting the “Visiting Child Abuse Prevention Campaign” to foster a child protection culture together with residents.

On the occasion of Child Abuse Prevention Day this year, a total of three campaigns to raise awareness about child abuse were held, with about 550 local residents participating. The campaign involved local residents, parents, and education institution workers who raised awareness about the seriousness of child abuse and emphasized the importance of prevention. Especially, promotional booths were operated at festivals and events in densely populated areas such as the Seonyudo Garden Festival, actively encouraging residents’ interest and participation through engaging events like OX quizzes.

To ensure swift and effective response in case of child abuse incidents, the district has organized “Child Abuse Dedicated Officers” and maintains a 24/7 emergency duty system 365 days a year, including weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, Yeongdeungpo Police Station, Seoul Southern Education Support Office, and Seoul Southern Child Protection Agency jointly operate the “Child Abuse Response Information Coordination Council” to strengthen cooperation with related organizations.

The district also focuses on proactive detection for child abuse prevention. Utilizing big data from the Social Security Information System (Haengbok-eum), children at high risk of abuse are systematically identified quarterly, and on-site investigations are conducted based on this to block potential abuse early.

Furthermore, the living conditions of children from vulnerable housing groups are inspected through surveys, identifying welfare blind spots and linking customized welfare services to support children’s healthy growth.

Going forward, the district plans to further activate resident participation for early detection and prevention of child abuse. Through various campaigns, it will strengthen community monitoring and reporting functions, continuously expand educational programs to raise awareness of children’s rights, and spread a child protection culture throughout the region via active promotional activities such as the “Our Neighborhood Talk(Talk) Agents.”

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Children are our future and precious beings who must be protected. The approach of ‘positive parenting,’ which respects children as they are, is the first step in preventing child abuse,” and added, “We will continue to develop projects for the prevention and protection of child abuse so that all children can live happily and safely in society.”
