A teenager who fatally stabbed a female peer he had never met before on Christmas night has been handcuffed.
The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 30th that they arrested a teenage boy identified as A on the 25th at around 8:30 p.m. on a road in front of an apartment in Sacheon, Gyeongnam, on charges of stabbing and killing a teenage girl identified as B.
The police found that A had gotten to know B through a social networking service (SNS) group chat involving several people, where they had been communicating for about four years.
In this group chat, which was a simple chat room without any particular topic, A and B started building a closer relationship through one-on-one conversations on another social networking service from earlier this year.
On the day of the crime, A took public transportation from Wonju, Gangwon-do, where he lives, to the neighborhood where B lives, and called B by saying, "I have something to give you," before committing the crime.
A reportedly told the police, "B's attitude toward me changed since April, and it seems B got a boyfriend," adding, "I hated the idea of B forming a new relationship with someone else, so I committed the crime and intended to kill myself as well."
The police confirmed that A had purchased the weapon in advance in April and September and that there was no accomplice at the time of the crime, but they judged the motive to be unclear, as there was no apparent relationship between the two.
Accordingly, the police plan to clarify the exact motive through mental health evaluations, psychological interviews, and forensic analysis of A's mobile phone.
