Incheon Songdo and Cheongna Super-Tall Towers 'Proceed as Planned'... Air Route Safety Settled for Now

The construction projects of the Landmark Tower in Songdo Districts 6 and 8 and the Cheongna City Tower in Incheon will proceed as originally planned without any changes in height, following the resolution of air route safety issues.

On the 27th, according to the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, the Seoul Regional Aviation Administration shared the results of a study on the impact of constructing ultra-high towers in Incheon on airport flight procedures with the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority and Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH).

The study results indicated that changes to flight procedures related to Incheon Airport and Gimpo Airport air traffic control are possible, and after a one-year design process, a request to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to change flight procedures will be submitted by the end of next year.

The Seoul Aviation Administration anticipated that the flight procedure changes would proceed smoothly, as the study process included consultations with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and feedback collection from airline stakeholders.

With the air route safety issues resolved, the representative ultra-high landmark projects in Incheon?the Cheongna City Tower and the Landmark Tower in Songdo Districts 6 and 8?can proceed as originally planned without any changes to the building heights.

The Cheongna City Tower project, which was normalized last June through an agreement between Incheon City and LH, had its bidding process halted due to flight procedure consultations. Following the Seoul Aviation Administration’s study, LH plans to announce the construction company bidding as early as January next year. The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority also decided to proceed with the international design competition as scheduled, along with changes to the development plan for the Landmark Tower in Songdo Districts 6 and 8.

The Songdo Districts 6 and 8 project involves constructing an ultra-high building with 103 floors above ground and a height exceeding 420 meters, while in Cheongna, a 30-story observation tower with a height of 448 meters is being developed.

Previously, the Seoul Aviation Administration conducted a safety study because these buildings, planned to be over 400 meters tall, could affect aircraft flight procedures.

Flight procedures refer to the maneuvering methods set to ensure that aircraft can safely conduct instrument flight according to air traffic control information, maintaining sufficient clearance from various obstacles.

The Landmark Tower in Songdo Districts 6 and 8 and the Cheongna City Tower are each located within the controlled airspace of Incheon Airport and Gimpo Airport, respectively, necessitating safety assurance according to these flight procedures.
