Approval of Basic Plan for Line 9 Extension 'Gangdong Hanam Namyangju Line' Metropolitan Railroad
Total Project Cost 2.824 Trillion KRW Invested... Hanam City Accelerates Project 추진
Gyeonggi Hanam City (Mayor Lee Hyun-jae) announced on the 24th that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee has approved the basic plan for the construction project of the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line (an extension of Subway Line 9), giving momentum to the project.
The ‘Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line’ is a railway line that will be constructed with a total project cost of 2.824 trillion KRW, connecting Gangil-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, to Misa Riverside New Town in Hanam City, Gyeonggi Province, Wangsu New Town in Namyangju City, and Jinjeop 2 District, with 8 stations in total.
The project implementing agency, Gyeonggi Province, plans to start the ‘basic and detailed design’ phase following the Ministry of Land’s approval, thereby accelerating the project.
Hanam City expects that once the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line, a metropolitan railway network connecting Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, is completed, severe traffic congestion in Misa Riverside New Town will be alleviated, and accessibility to Seoul Gangnam, the largest business district in Korea, will improve significantly, greatly reducing commuting times.
A Hanam City official stated, “Once the Line 9 extension project is completed, the commuting time for residents of Misa Riverside New Town who work in Seoul Gangnam is expected to be cut in half. Currently, traveling to Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, which is adjacent to the Teheran-ro office district in Gangnam, requires about 44 minutes with two transfers starting from Misa Station on Line 5. In the future, passengers will be able to board at the tentatively named Shinmisa Station on Line 9 and reach Bongeunsa Station in 22 minutes without transfers,” he explained.
Furthermore, the approved basic plan reflects a change in the turnaround point for regular trains from the previously planned 942 Station (tentatively named Godeok Gangil 1 District Station) to 944 Station (tentatively named Shinmisa Station). Going forward, through coordination with Seoul City on train operation plans, the project will actively promote simultaneous operation of both regular and express trains.
Mayor Lee Hyun-jae explained, “After collaborating with Gangdong-gu and persuading related agencies such as the Ministry of Land, Seoul City, and Gyeonggi Province, we were able to extend the turnaround point for regular trains to the tentatively named Shinmisa Station.”
He added, “Based on the approval of the basic plan, we will closely coordinate with Gyeonggi Province regarding the location of subway entrances to ensure convenient use for citizens during the detailed design phase. We will also make every effort to advance the subway opening date ahead of the original target year (2031).”
