This forum was held in conjunction with the final report meeting of the "Gyeongsangbuk-do Marine Bio Industry Master Plan Establishment" project, which began in May, and was attended by about 100 participants including city and county officials from five East Coast regions (Gyeongju-si, Pohang-si, Yeongdeok-gun, Ulleung-gun, Uljin-gun), related organizations, and universities.

Following the final report meeting of the project, expert presentations were given on the following topics: ▲Current status and prospects of marine bio R&D using fishery biological resources (Kim Young-ok, Manager, National Institute of Fisheries Science) ▲Government policy trends to revitalize marine bio R&D (Kim Jung-ae, Team Leader, Korea Institute of Marine Science and Technology Promotion) ▲Establishment of a foundation for utilizing deep-sea marine biological resources in the East Sea (Min Won-ki, Director, East Sea Environment Research Center, KIOST) ▲Current status and future prospects of the Gyeongbuk marine biomedical industry (Professor Cha Hyung-joon, Pohang University of Science and Technology).

Marine bio applies marine biotechnology to marine biological resources and can be expanded into all bio-industry fields such as food, cosmetics, medical, and environment, making it significant for discovering future new growth industries and creating high added value.

KIOST plans to actively cooperate to help Gyeongbuk Province grow as a hub for the marine bio industry by utilizing the infrastructure and research capabilities possessed by the institute, focusing on discovering and fostering regional specialized industries, establishing infrastructure, and nurturing professional manpower.

Yang Hee-cheol, Director of the Marine Law and Policy Research Institute at KIOST, said, "Through the establishment of a comprehensive plan for fostering the Gyeongbuk marine bio industry, it is expected that customized marine bio industry achievements reflecting regional demand will be possible."

Additionally, Lee Young-seok, Head of the East Coast Regional Headquarters of Gyeongbuk Province, said, "Based on the Gyeongbuk Marine Bio Industry Master Plan, we will do our best to make the marine bio industry a future industry of Gyeongbuk."
