The Okjeong~Pocheon Metropolitan Railroad Project, promoted as part of the national balanced development project, will begin construction at the end of this month.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 17th, the Metropolitan Transportation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport approved the Okjeong~Pocheon Metropolitan Railroad project plan on the afternoon of the 16th.

The "Okjeong~Pocheon Metropolitan Railroad Project" is the second phase of the Dobongsan~Pocheon Metropolitan Railroad Project, an extension of Seoul Subway Line 7. It is a subway construction project connecting the end point of the Dobongsan~Okjeong Metropolitan Railroad Project in Goeup District, Yangju City, passing through Okjeong District, to Gunnae-myeon, Pocheon City, covering a total distance of 17.1 km.

The total project cost is 1.493 trillion KRW, with 4 stations and one light maintenance vehicle depot to be newly established.

This project plan approval pertains to Section 1 construction in Yangju City. It involves constructing a 4.856 km underground tunnel from Goeup District, Yangju City to Yuljeong-dong, the boundary of Pocheon City, with a total construction cost of 353.4 billion KRW.

Following this project plan approval, Gyeonggi Province will immediately proceed with land compensation and various permits and approvals, promptly start construction, and plans to complete the construction by the second half of 2030.

Once the Okjeong~Pocheon Metropolitan Railroad opens, the travel time from Pocheon City Hall to Dobongsan Station during rush hours will be reduced by 5 minutes compared to cars and by 24 minutes compared to buses, greatly improving transportation conditions for entering Seoul from the northeastern region of Gyeonggi Province.

A Gyeonggi Province official said, "The Okjeong~Pocheon Metropolitan Railroad is a railway project promoted for the balanced development of the neglected border area. Since it is a valuable result obtained through numerous discussions and various alternative reviews such as project plan changes and operation methods, we will prepare thoroughly and strive to open it on schedule."

Meanwhile, Sections 2 and 3 in Pocheon City have completed design and are scheduled to start construction after project plan change approval in the first half of 2025.
