Recognition for Contributions to Primary and Secondary Education Development, Award Ceremony on the 17th at Nongshim Hotel
Former Jangjeon Elementary School Principal Kwon Haesung and former Centum High School Principal Gwak Gangpyo have been selected as the recipients of the 37th Busan Education Award.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 13th that the "37th Busan Education Award Ceremony" will be held at 4 p.m. on the 17th in the International Conference Room of the Office of Education Annex.
The "Busan Education Award" was established in 1988 to establish a respected teacher award and foster a culture of respect for educators. Every year at the end of the year, individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of education in Busan are selected and awarded.
In the elementary education category, former Principal Kwon Haesung was recognized for his efforts to improve classroom teaching over 39 years and 9 months, and for leading the development of elementary education by delivering various training sessions in the field of science for prospective teachers and current teachers.
While serving as vice principal of Suseong Elementary School, the school was selected as the Best School in Busan at the "Top 100 Curriculum Competition," and while serving as principal of Jeonpo Elementary School, it was selected as the Best School in the "Top 100 Curriculum." As principal of Jangjeon Elementary School, he contributed to curriculum innovation by operating the "Ministry of Education Curriculum Pilot School."
After retirement, he served as chairman of the Hanmaeum Scholarship Foundation and chairman of the Community Education Council, working to support underprivileged students and promote social education.
In the secondary education category, former Principal Gwak Gangpyo was selected for his dedication to secondary education during his 42 years of service as a teacher and education professional in elementary, middle, and high schools.
During his 14 years as a teacher, former Principal Gwak was actively involved in youth organizations such as the Scouts and the Korea Youth Federation, focusing on guidance and development. While serving as an education professional, he worked to stabilize labor relations and eradicate school violence. He also served as the founding principal of Jeonggwan High School, contributing to the establishment of the subject classroom system foundation and the school management model.
Since retirement, he has been serving as the head of the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education’s Teacher Rights Protection Legal Support Team, supporting junior teachers through counseling and school visit consulting to prevent infringements on educational activities.
Lee Seokgyu, Director of Education Policy at the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, "The two recipients of this year’s award have devoted their lives to shaping the future of Busan education, serving as role models for younger educators. The Office of Education will do its best to follow their love, passion, and dedication to education and advance Busan to become the center of education in Korea beyond the city itself."
