Promoting Korean Language, Writing, and Dialects through Street Campaigns, Contests, and Non-Face-to-Face Activities
The Korean Language and Culture Center at Dong-A University (Director Kim Young-sun) held the ‘10th Graduation Ceremony for the Busan Uri Mal Gakkeumi.’
‘Uri Mal Gakkeumi’ is a university student volunteer organization hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Language and Culture Center Federation. It currently operates as clubs in 12 regional Korean Language and Culture Centers nationwide, and in Busan, it has been organized by the Dong-A University Korean Language and Culture Center since 2015.
Uri Mal Gakkeumi members cherish the Korean language and script and work to promote regional dialects through activities such as ‘Uri Mal Jikimi’ who improve broadcasting, communication, and public language, ‘Uri Mal Alimi’ who produce newspapers and promotional videos on various topics related to the Korean language, and ‘Jiyeogeo Akimi’ who conduct dialect surveys and create promotional materials to preserve Busan’s regional dialect.
This year, Busan Uri Mal Gakkeumi carried out various activities to cherish the Korean language and promote Busan’s regional dialect, including street promotions commemorating Sejong the Great’s birthday titled ‘The Great Teacher, King Sejong,’ menu improvement campaigns and street promotions, the 8th ‘Uri Mal Geul Sarang Big Festival’ celebrating the 578th Hangeul Day, street promotions for ‘Meeting Busan Citizens’ Regional Dialect,’ the ‘Find the Hidden King Sejong! Contest,’ and the ‘Beautiful Regional Dialect Calligraphy Contest.’
In addition to activities directly engaging with citizens, they also conducted various non-face-to-face activities to promote correct spelling, pure Korean words, and regional dialects, striving to widely promote and preserve the Korean language.
Ryu Da-in, representative of Busan Uri Mal Gakkeumi and a junior in the Department of Media Communication at Dong-A University, said, “Following last year, I had a meaningful time participating in Gakkeumi activities this year as well. I hope all students who participated understand how significant it is to protect and promote the Korean language and take pride in their work.”
