On the 6th, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Wang Nan (37), a Chinese woman, was on vacation at Phu Tham National Park in northeastern Thailand in 2019 when her husband pushed her off a cliff, causing her to fall 34 meters. Wang, who was three months pregnant at the time, suffered 17 fractures and underwent five surgeries. She lost the baby she was carrying, had over 100 metal pins inserted into her body, and used a wheelchair for three years.

After grueling rehabilitation training, Wang was able to walk again starting last year. Upon full recovery, she first expressed her gratitude to the Thai rescue workers and local police who saved her. Her husband was sentenced to 33 years and 4 months in prison on charges including attempted murder and is currently incarcerated in a Thai prison.

After recovering, Wang worked hard to rebuild her life. She conceived a child through in vitro fertilization and gave birth to a son last September. However, since Wang and her ex-husband are still legally married, their son had to take the husband's surname, even though he is not the father. This led her to formally file for divorce recently. According to Chinese marriage law, both parties must appear in court for a divorce trial. However, Wang stated that her husband, who is serving his sentence, cannot attend the divorce trial, causing difficulties in the lawsuit.

Moreover, after Wang filed for divorce, her husband demanded 30 million yuan (about 5.7 billion KRW) in alimony from her. He claims this is compensation for his "mental suffering and loss of youth," and his mother reportedly criticized Wang, saying that her business success tempted her son into making a mistake.

Local netizens who learned of this story commented, "It's shameless to commit attempted murder and then demand compensation," "The victim should not suffer more due to legal loopholes," and "When a spouse commits a serious crime like attempted murder, the court should promptly process the divorce without the perpetrator's consent."
