Reform New Party "Emergency Martial Law Suspicion Limited in Standing Committee... Immediate National Investigation Needed"

The Reform New Party proposed on the 5th to conduct a parliamentary state investigation regarding President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of martial law.

Cheon Ha-ram, floor leader of the Reform New Party, mentioned the limitations of fact-finding investigations at the level of individual standing committees concerning the martial law declared by President Yoon Seok-yeol and lifted by the National Assembly, and advocated for a state investigation during a press conference at the National Assembly on the same day.

Floor leader Cheon said, "A state investigation, which can be initiated by the request of more than one-quarter of the total members, can start even now," adding, "We need to find out why the rebellion started in the first place, who wrote the martial law proclamation and how, and by whose decision the martial law troops entered the National Assembly, recreating the terror of the 1972 martial law."

He stated, "Specifically, we need to understand the overall plan: how they intended to seize control of the National Assembly, what the purpose and plan of the arrest squad were, and what they intended to do after breaking the glass and entering the National Assembly," and added, "We must also find out why the martial law troops attempted to seize constitutional institutions such as the National Election Commission and the Supreme Court beyond just the National Assembly."

Floor leader Cheon said, "The National Assembly must verify through a state investigation whether the deployment of martial law troops near the Constitutional Court, as reported to the Reform New Party, is true, as well as the suspicions of martial law troop involvement concerning Kim Eo-jun."

He emphasized, "The National Assembly must do everything it can for the swift acceptance of impeachment, punishment for the crime of rebellion, and prevention of recurrence. Now is the time for a state investigation rather than individual standing committee inquiries on current issues."
