Smart City Uijeongbu, Leading Innovation in Real-Time Fine Dust Reduction Project

Combining Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with Public Transportation to Tackle Fine Dust Pollution

Uijeongbu City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Dong-geun) announced on the 3rd that it will actively promote the "ICT-based Fine Dust Reduction and Real-time LCD Display Device Smart Demonstration Project" by utilizing the Smart City Regulatory Sandbox (regulatory exemption system) led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

With a total budget of 666 million KRW (500 million KRW from the national government and 166 million KRW from private resources), the project plans to present new possibilities for improving urban air quality and utilizing smart city technologies.

In particular, this project is the first attempt in Korea to solve fine dust problems by integrating information and communication technology (ICT) with public transportation. A fine dust reduction integrated system is installed on city buses to purify fine dust in the air during operation, and this information is provided to citizens through real-time LCD display devices.

Through this, it is expected to practically achieve fine dust reduction while inducing interest and participation in environmental issues.

Uijeongbu City selected 20 buses on five routes, including public management buses No. 1-5, and installed fine dust reduction devices on vehicles operating on major roads. These vehicles operate on routes including Minrak-dong Garage, Uijeongbu Station, Jangam Station, and Dobongsan Station, purifying fine dust.

Notably, the purified data is transmitted in real time to a central data collection system, which the city will use to analyze fine dust purification levels by region and route and utilize it for future air quality improvement policy development.

Previously, the city collaborated with the city council and related organizations to establish a stable support system for project implementation and is conducting the project by temporarily exempting regulations related to the Outdoor Advertising Act and Automobile Regulations through the Smart City Regulatory Sandbox.

The project period is until June 2027, and based on operational performance data, the possibility of future expansion will be reviewed.

Through this demonstration project, Uijeongbu City plans to prove the effectiveness of fine dust reduction technology, establish a data-based air quality management system, and create a model case of applying smart city technology in citizens' daily lives.

Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, "This demonstration project, which integrates advanced technology and public transportation, will be an innovative case of urban environment improvement and information provision that Uijeongbu citizens can experience," adding, "We will do our best to solve the urgent environmental issue of fine dust reduction and develop Uijeongbu into a leading smart city."
