The ‘Clean Gyeonggi City and County Evaluation’ is a project that evaluates resource circulation policies such as waste reduction and recycling rate improvement, crackdown on illegal activities and publicity, and establishment of separate collection infrastructure. This evaluation was conducted by dividing the 31 cities and counties in the province into three groups (A, B, C) and assessing 14 quantitative evaluation indicators including △waste reduction △recycling rate improvement △crackdown on illegal activities and publicity, as well as a qualitative evaluation checking special policies and best practices for reducing household waste.

Gapyeong-gun was selected as an excellent city and county in Group C by receiving high evaluations in 14 evaluation items including △waste generation reduction △recycling rate improvement △expansion of resident participation in cleanup activities, and specialized resource circulation policies.

In particular, Gapyeong-gun received excellent evaluations by implementing various policies under the theme of ‘Gapyeong-gun’s Resource Circulation Story,’ such as △operation of an integrated bulky waste management system △cleanup activities by senior environmental guardians △distribution of reusable cups and installation of tumbler washing machines to reduce disposable products △introduction of unmanned transparent PET bottle collection machines △production of recycled paper bags from newspapers.

Kwon Taek-sun, head of the Resource Circulation Division, said, “This selection as an excellent local government is an achievement made possible through the cooperation of residents and public institutions,” and added, “We will continue to discover resident-participation projects and promote policies that can reduce waste and increase recycling rates.”

Meanwhile, the award ceremony will be held in December, and the secured prize fund of 100 million KRW will be used to strengthen resource circulation policies and improve resident convenience projects.
