"Less than the ordered weight" complaint
"Due to shock absorbers... for safe delivery" claim
Netizens: "Nonsense logic"
A customer who received fewer tangerines than ordered heard a ridiculous response saying it was "for safe delivery," drawing attention to the story.
On the 19th, a netizen posted on their social media account about ordering tangerines from a company in Jeju Island through an online store. According to the post, the writer ordered 5kg of open-field tangerines, but after the delivery arrived, the measured weight of the tangerines was only 4.5kg. The customer then inquired with the company about the discrepancy from the originally stated weight.

The company gave a somewhat absurd reply. They began by saying, "We apologize first," and added, "You probably expected 5kg, so you may have been disappointed when you opened the box and found 4.5kg." They continued, "We fully understand this. Our company prioritizes delivery safety to ensure customers have a fresh tangerine experience," explaining, "If we pack 5kg of tangerines tightly in the box, the tangerines may get crushed or spoiled." They further stated, "Following the courier company's recommendations, we include shock absorbers inside the box and leave some space to prevent the tangerines from being pressed," and explained, "As a result, the tangerine weight becomes 4.5kg, but this is our decision to send the tangerines fresher and safer to our customers."
Despite the company's explanation, public opinion was cold. People who saw the story responded with comments such as, "Then why not just sell it stating 4.5kg?" "It's ridiculous to deceive consumers and then talk nonsense," "Should we also send money safely with a 10% discount?" and "I think this issue should be reported to the Korea Consumer Agency," showing they could not understand the seller's logic.

As the post spread to online communities, criticism toward the company poured into the product Q&A board. Netizens said, "I live in Jeju, and this is really embarrassing. Does it make sense that 500g of the 5kg tangerines is cushioning material?" and "Stop making excuses and give a sincere response. In this world, a single word can determine whether you get rewarded or punished with your money." Eventually, the company seemed to acknowledge the controversy and reportedly revised the weight listed in the product selection options. They changed the originally stated 5kg and 10kg to 4.5kg and 9kg respectively, bringing the issue to a temporary close.
