Some Military Officers Face Possible Charges of 'Treason'

President-elect Donald Trump is considering putting former and current high-ranking U.S. military officials on military trial in connection with the catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

According to NBC News on the 17th (local time), Trump’s transition team is compiling a list of former and current high-ranking U.S. military officials involved in the Afghanistan withdrawal operation. The transition team is reportedly open to prosecuting these military officials in military courts, and may even charge senior generals who made key decisions with the maximum charge of treason.

Earlier, President Joe Biden decided to withdraw from Afghanistan in his first year in office in 2021, but the withdrawal caused major chaos due to lack of preparation. A suicide bombing at Kabul airport resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. soldiers. In response, the transition team is expected to form a special committee related to the Afghanistan withdrawal after the launch of Trump’s second term administration and begin an investigation.

However, there are criticisms that Trump himself is not free from responsibility for the Afghanistan withdrawal. The decision to withdraw was originally agreed upon by Trump in February 2020 with the Taliban while he was still president-elect, and it is argued that no proper execution plan was prepared despite the agreement to withdraw by May 1, 2021.
