This activity involved about 30 Saemaeul leaders throwing 800 EM soil balls, which were pre-made at Gyeongan Stream.
EM soil balls are natural purifiers made by mixing microbial solution and loess. After fermenting for a certain period, when they are thrown into rivers or streams, they gradually dissolve, purifying the water and eliminating odors. As the ecosystem of rivers and streams recovers, it also absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, providing an air purification effect.
Shin Won-young, head of the Gwangju Branch, said, “This activity was a good opportunity to directly participate in environmental cleanup and realize the importance of environmental protection,” adding, “We expect the soil balls to greatly help improve water quality in streams and remove green algae and odors.”
Meanwhile, the Saemaeul Movement Gwangju Branch is actively leading activities for the development of Gwangju City, such as the visiting Love Red Food Truck, kimchi-making to help neighbors, and potato harvesting.
