The 20th Hankyoreh-Busan International Symposium Held Poster of the 20th Hankyoreh-Busan International Symposium.

The "Hankyoreh-Busan International Symposium" has been established as a forum to discuss the value of "peace" over the past 20 years since being designated as the official symposium of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in 2005.

It is co-hosted by the Hankyoreh Unification Culture Foundation and the city, with support from Hankyoreh Newspaper and BNK Busan Bank.

This year’s symposium, marking the year of global elections in which half of the world’s population participates, will explore Busan’s role amid an international situation where change and conflict coexist under the theme "Global Great Transformation and Busan’s Role."

About 100 participants from domestic and international academia and media, including Mayor Park Hyung-jun, former President Moon Jae-in, Moon Jung-in, Chairman of the Hankyoreh Unification Culture Foundation, and Choi Woo-sung, CEO of Hankyoreh, are expected to attend.

The event will include ▲keynote speeches and dialogues ▲three subcommittees composed of presentations and discussions ▲special lectures, with the opening ceremony held at 9:30 a.m. on the 13th at Nurimaru APEC House.

In the keynote speech, Steven Berthaime, Senior Researcher at the Carnegie International Peace Foundation, will appear via video to present on the theme "In the Era of Global Great Transformation, Seeking the Path of Peace and Cooperation," followed by a dialogue with Moon Jung-in, Chairman of the Hankyoreh Unification Culture Foundation.

Also, Tatsuya Yoshioka, founder of Peace Boat and a leader and activist in Japanese civil society, will present on the theme "Is East Asia Entering a New Cold War?" and engage in an international discussion with Professor Cha Tae-seo of Sungkyunkwan University, Professor Chai Dongje of National Chung Hsing University, and Professor David Vine of American University, continuing diverse debates.

In particular, in line with the movement to enact the "Global Hub City Special Act," which Busan citizens ardently desire, a subcommittee titled "Global Hub City Special Act and Busan’s Vision" will be established to discuss Busan’s vision as another national development axis comparable to the metropolitan area.

Oh Jae-hwan, Deputy Director of the Busan Research Institute, will present on the theme "Global Hub City Special Act and Busan’s Vision," and engage in a lively discussion with related experts on Busan’s urban diplomacy strategies.

This session is expected to be meaningful as it seeks Busan’s role and vision considering its place as a bridge between the Eurasian continent and the Pacific and as a "Global Hub City."

Additionally, as an MZ session, an award ceremony for the "Youth Peace Essay Contest" and a talk show with the winners will be held, providing a platform for young people to exchange opinions surrounding "peace."

Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, "The meaningful discussions shared at today’s symposium will be an important turning point for Busan to open the future as a 'Global Hub City.' I ask for your great interest in this symposium, which seeks Busan’s role, vision, and the value of peace amid an international situation where change and conflict coexist."
