A hotel guest in China was hospitalized after drinking the liquid inside a bottled water bottle provided in the room. It was revealed that the bottle contained cleaning vinegar instead of water.

According to Chinese local media such as 'Guangmingwang' on the 21st (local time), Mr. A, who stayed at a hotel in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China on the 16th, took a bottled water bottle from the room and drank it. However, he immediately spat it out after noticing a sour smell and strange taste.

Curious, Mr. A examined the bottle and was shocked to find that it contained vinegar, not water. He immediately reported this to the police and received medical treatment. The police who arrived at the scene sealed the bottle cap to prevent any possible accidents.

The hotel claimed, "The bottled water containing vinegar was due to a cleaning staff's mistake." A representative told the media, "Cleaning staff often fill empty bottled water bottles with white vinegar," adding, "It seems an employee accidentally left it in the room." They also stated, "To explain this, we showed Mr. A the purchase list of white vinegar and the new vinegar before it was put into the bottled water bottle."

Mr. A suffered minor injuries inside his mouth but fortunately, his life was not in danger. The police have launched an investigation to determine the detailed circumstances of the incident.

Local netizens who heard about the incident reacted with comments such as, "I can't even trust bottled water in hotels anymore," "What if it had been cleaning bleach?" "Can we just call it a cleaning staff's mistake?" "I will never go to that hotel," "I never use anything in hotels because it always feels suspicious," "I'm uneasy about the shampoo and body wash too," and "There are many poorly managed hotels."

Meanwhile, a controversy related to bottled water also arose at a famous domestic hotel. In 2022, an online community post claimed that "bleach was detected in bottled water provided in a famous hotel room." The poster said, "This happened after booking a 3-star hotel," and added, "When I poured and tried to drink the bottled water in the room, a strong bleach smell spread as soon as the water touched my tongue." At that time, the hotel acknowledged the bleach smell in the water, but the investigating detective concluded the case as accidental injury after finding no traces of external injection such as with a syringe, and after investigating front desk and cleaning staff, no further evidence was found, so the investigation was closed.
