Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, held a policy vision tour at Jangseong County Office Academy on the 15th and stated, “Jeollanam-do will take the lead in supporting the development of Jangseong, which is advancing under the new catchphrase ‘Growth Jangseong’ in various fields such as medical care, subtropical agriculture, and advanced data centers.”
The event was attended by about 80 people, including Governor Kim Young-rok, Jangseong County Mayor Kim Han-jong, Jangseong County Council Chairman Shim Min-seop, Jeollanam-do Council members Kim Hoe-sik, Jeong Cheol, Park Hyun-sook, as well as youth and residents.
Na Gang-yeol, Senior Research Fellow at the Jeonnam Research Institute, who presented the future vision under the theme “Advanced Future Industry Hub, Korea’s Representative Resting Place Jangseong,” proposed seven future visions for Jangseong: ▲ Establishment of a specialized advanced medical cluster for cerebrovascular diseases ▲ Creation of an advanced industry innovation hub ▲ Development of Korea’s representative public resting place ▲ Formation of a premium cultural tourism city ▲ Leading innovation platform for subtropical agriculture ▲ Establishment of a complex shopping and cultural hub in Jangseong ▲ Gradual securing of a super-regional transportation network.
Researcher Na emphasized, “Rest, healing, and leisure will drive Jangseong’s future development.” He also pointed out that the convenient wide-area transportation system, connected by Honam Expressway, Gochang~Damyang Expressway, and National Routes 1 and 24, is a potential asset for Jangseong’s development.
He added, “Considering Jangseong’s potential, it can leap forward as a core hub of Korea’s medical industry, and by building a data center combined with Gwangju Advanced 3 District’s Artificial Intelligence (AI), it can also lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
During his welcoming remarks, Mayor Kim Han-jong urgently requested “a 1 billion KRW provincial subsidy to ensure the normal progress of the Cheongun Underpass construction project,” to which Governor Kim responded, “Jeollanam-do is preparing active support.”
The Cheongun Underpass, started in June 2021 to resolve east-west regional disparities caused by the Honam Line railway section and to establish a smooth transportation network, is currently 35% complete as of July this year, with underground wall structures installed and excavation underway.
Mayor Kim Han-jong also requested support for the Jeollanam-do Balanced Development 300 Project to revitalize the Jangseongho Tourist Site. He explained that although Jangseongho Tourist Site is a representative landmark, visitor numbers have been decreasing due to aging facilities and lack of tourism content after 20 years since its completion.
In response to Kang Dae-seok, Chairman of Jangseong County Policy Advisory Committee’s request to strive for the establishment of a National Cardiovascular Center, Governor Kim Young-rok promised, “The establishment of the Cardiovascular Center will not end with its construction but includes various development directions such as expansion of related industries before and after, and we will strive to further expand related industries.”
