A national strategic project to lead the global satellite communication market is being promoted.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea (hereinafter ETRI) announced on the 2nd that Han Seong-su, Director of the CT Strategy Research Center, held a forum in Seoul to present the investment feasibility review results of the hyperspace national strategic project ‘ABLE-MAN’.
Concept and Structure of Able Man. Able Man is a ground-to-non-ground integrated network that enables AI distributed globally across on-device, edge, and cloud to autonomously cooperate through real-time connections. Provided by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI)
ABLE-MAN is a ground-non-terrestrial integrated network technology that includes direct ruler, satellite edge computing, 3D Open RAN, and intelligent cooperative networking.
The project aims to lead the global satellite communication market using the K-satellite system through challenges in satellite communication technology and market development due to spatial expansion of mobile communication in preparation for the opening of the 6G and space communication era, as well as cooperation among industry, academia, and research ecosystems.
The core is to build next-generation communication infrastructure encompassing land, sea, and air with innovative technology called hyperspace network. ETRI expects that the hyperspace network, which enables communication beyond space, will maximize data transmission speed and efficiency, presenting a new paradigm for the digital economy.
In particular, this technology has great potential to be applied in various fields such as smart factories, autonomous driving, smart cities, and defense. It also has the potential to bring innovative changes across industries.
ETRI plans to officially start research and development related to the hyperspace network from next year. To this end, it plans to operate a ‘tentative Hyperspace Network R&D Strategy Committee’ to gather the capabilities of experts from industry, academia, and research.
The forum was organized to gather public and private capabilities to proactively prepare for the growth of new businesses and services, discover business models, and seek directions to secure future growth and technological sovereignty.
A total of 14 experts from industry, government agencies, academia, and private organizations, including LIG Nex1, Hanwha Systems, and Korea Aerospace Industries, attended the event.
At the forum, participants shared the investment feasibility analysis results of the ABLE-MAN project and exchanged opinions on public-private and global cooperation plans to enhance the economic feasibility of the domestic low Earth orbit satellite system.
Experts from each field freely discussed specific demands and suggestions they felt on site, discussing ways to enhance the effectiveness of the project.
Director Han said, “Through the Strategy Committee, we will reflect the needs of the ecosystem and expert opinions to create a concrete execution plan for the ABLE-MAN project and propose it to the government,” adding, “The ABLE-MAN project will respond to new challenges of the 6G era by utilizing hyperspace network technology and will establish an important foundation to dramatically advance the nation’s digital infrastructure.”
