A man in his 30s, a 'defector from North Korea,' who tried to steal a bus and cross the Tongil Bridge to return to North Korea, was arrested by the police.
According to the Paju Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, around 1 a.m. on the 1st, a man in his 30s, Mr. A, stole a village bus parked at a garage in Munsan-eup, Paju, and began driving it. The vehicle keys were kept inside the village bus at the time. Mr. A sped from the southern end of Tongil Bridge in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, heading north. Ignoring the objections of the military sentry blocking his way, he drove the vehicle until he crashed into a barricade and stopped, and was arrested around 1:30 a.m.
Mr. A is a defector who escaped from North Korea over 10 years ago and settled in South Korea, and was known to have recently lived in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. In his police statement, Mr. A said regarding his motive for the crime, "I committed the crime to return to North Korea because life in South Korea was difficult." It has been confirmed so far that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The police have booked Mr. A on criminal charges and are investigating the case.
