Seven autonomous districts in Seoul through which the Gyeongwon Line (Yongsan Station to Dobongsan Station, including branches) passes have joined forces to realize the undergrounding of the railway.

The immediate goal of the seven districts, including Dobong-gu, is to have the Gyeongwon Line reflected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s (MOLIT) integrated railway underground development pilot project and comprehensive plan.

To be included in MOLIT’s comprehensive plan, on the 23rd of last month, a meeting of district heads was held at Dongdaemun District Office to form the ‘Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council.’ The districts promoting the undergrounding of the Gyeongwon Line are ▲Dobong-gu ▲Nowon-gu ▲Seongbuk-gu ▲Dongdaemun-gu ▲Seongdong-gu ▲Yongsan-gu ▲Jungnang-gu.

At this meeting, the ‘Draft for the Formation of the Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council’ was discussed to establish the direction for project promotion through mutual exchange among the districts and to devise a joint promotion plan for the undergrounding project.

The integrated railway underground development project focuses on relocating the railway, which has divided the city, underground and innovatively recreating urban space by developing the railway land and surrounding areas. Since the enactment of the ‘(Abbreviated) Railway Underground Integrated Development Act’ in January this year, MOLIT started a research project in March to establish a comprehensive plan, and Seoul City is also conducting a study to develop a basic concept for the areas surrounding the underground railway.

The district heads belonging to the Promotion Council stated, “Through this meeting of local leaders, cooperation among the districts will be strengthened, and momentum for the smooth promotion of the Gyeongwon Line undergrounding project will be gained. Going forward, the seven districts will conduct in-depth discussions on the project’s promotion direction and council operation plans shared at this meeting, while jointly voicing their opinions to Seoul City to ensure the Gyeongwon Line is undergrounded.”

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “We will actively participate in the Promotion Council and do our best to have the Gyeongwon Line selected as a route in MOLIT’s railway undergrounding project. Additionally, we will seek ways to maximize the development of our region, which has been divided east-west by the railway, and the convenience of residents.”
