Creating a 'Safe Commute to and from School' through Comprehensive Cleanup of Hazards around Elementary, Middle, and High Schools for the New Semester
Focused Crackdown on Illegal Advertisements, Debris, and Street Vendors with Voluntary Cleanup Guidance and Promotion
Expecting a Clean Urban Landscape Image by Preventing Safety Accidents and Establishing a Pleasant Walking Environment
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has promoted a comprehensive cleanup around schools to preemptively eliminate safety hazards for students and create a pleasant commuting environment in preparation for the new school term.
The recent "Comprehensive Cleanup Around Schools for the New School Term" was carried out starting August 13, when many schools began their term, focusing on 44 elementary, middle, and high schools. The cleanup targeted child protection zones (within 300m from the main entrance) and educational environment protection zones (within 200m from the boundary line). Even areas outside these zones were included if they required safety management for students commuting or were exposed to harmful environments.
Before enforcement, the district conducted publicity and guidance to eradicate illegal storage and advertisements. Subsequently, enforcement teams composed of public officials and contractors carried out cleanup operations during morning and afternoon commuting hours, each responsible for designated areas.
The cleanup targeted hazardous advertisements (such as standing signs) that cause pedestrian inconvenience or safety accidents, harmful advertisements (flyers, posters, business cards, etc.), unauthorized street vendors (street stalls), and illegal storage. In particular, banners, standing signs, and banners that obstruct children’s sight and cause traffic accidents were intensively inspected.
Additionally, the district simultaneously addressed old signs threatening pedestrian safety and signs at risk of damage or falling.
During enforcement, business owners and property owners were informed that violations of related regulations and non-compliance could result in forced removal or fines and other administrative actions, encouraging them to voluntarily clean up first. As a result, about 60 standing signs were voluntarily removed.
The district plans to continue regular patrols and enforcement even after the comprehensive cleanup period. The goal is to ensure students can focus on their studies in a safer environment and to improve the cityscape by creating a pleasant walking environment.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “By conducting a comprehensive cleanup of illegal advertisements around schools at the start of the school term, we expect to preemptively eliminate safety hazards for students and improve the walking environment. We will continue to clean up illegal advertisements and other issues to create a beautiful and clean Yeongdeungpo.”
