Next Year, 'Jumin Jachi Wiwonhoe' to Transition to 'Jumin Jachi Hoe'
Aiming to Enhance Representation and Expand Resident Participation
On the 23rd, Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province announced that since the 20th, it has been holding resident briefings to transition to 'Resident Autonomy Councils,' starting with Songtan, Wonpyeong, and Dongsak-dong, and will continue touring eight eup, myeon, and dong administrative welfare centers until the 5th of next month.

The city's briefing sessions aim to fully transition the existing Resident Autonomy Committees to Resident Autonomy Councils starting next year. The city judged that the current Resident Autonomy Committees have limitations in operation, such as lacking representativeness and having functions limited to simple deliberation and resolution, and therefore, organizational transformation is necessary to expand resident participation and realize practical resident autonomy.
Currently, out of 25 locations in Pyeongtaek, 17 have been converted to Resident Autonomy Councils. The remaining eight eup, myeon, and dong Resident Autonomy Committees that have not yet transitioned will be fully converted to Resident Autonomy Councils starting next year, with the policy to realize practical resident-led autonomy where residents find and solve issues on their own.
Jung Jang-seon, mayor of Pyeongtaek, stated, "We will do our best going forward to establish resident autonomy through supporting the cultivation of autonomous awareness and to enable the local community to develop together through active resident participation."
