Fostering Global Talent for the 4th Industrial Revolution... Yeongdeungpo-gu Hosts 'Overseas Advanced Aerospace Camp' Visit Students interacting with the Keparan robot at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Japan

The Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation announced that it conducted a visit to the ‘Overseas Advanced Aerospace Camp,’ providing 25 outstanding middle school science talents with an opportunity to explore advanced overseas scientific cultures, thereby laying a foundation for them to grow into the next generation of science talents.

In particular, this camp is significant as a new attempt that overturns the existing scholarship projects. It moved away from the traditional benevolent scholarship projects that gave cash such as tuition or encouragement money to students in difficult circumstances, and instead offered valuable experiences where students could directly face the wider world overseas. The aim was to fully support the students so that through overseas experiences, they could develop interest and enthusiasm for science and find their future dreams and talents.

The 25 outstanding science talents, finally selected through recommendations from 12 middle schools in the region and document and interview screenings, held the overseas aerospace camp launch ceremony on June 14 and visited the ‘Tsukuba Space Center,’ the headquarters of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), from July 16 to 19 for a 3-night, 4-day trip.

The ‘Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)’ is one of the world’s top space centers following NASA, where visitors can tour the history and exhibitions of space science and aviation technology with expert guides.

At this site, students directly observed satellite and rocket technology, astronaut training, actual space food, and space equipment, nurturing their dreams as future scientists.

Especially, the Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation actively supported students to choose and explore their areas of interest independently to cultivate the qualities and capabilities necessary for their growth as future science talents.

Additionally, time was spent visiting the Japanese ‘National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation’ and the ‘National Museum of Nature and Science.’ Participating students learned about science and technology spanning from cutting-edge technology to the Earth’s environment, space exploration, and the mysteries of life, while experiencing various exhibits firsthand.

The Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation expects this camp to be an important milestone for students to grow into global future talents equipped with scientific inquiry skills and creativity needed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

Kim (3rd year, Daeyeong Middle School), a student who participated in the camp, said, “At the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, I felt the true meaning of science and the core of technology as ‘human benefit,’” adding, “If I become a pharmaceutical researcher, I will create medicines truly needed by humanity, not just driven by capital.”

Also, Shin (3rd year, Yanghwa Middle School) shared, “I questioned the definition of stars, which I had taken for granted, and realized once again the importance of observation and curiosity.”

A representative of the Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation stated, “If students go abroad, face the wider world, and have various experiences, their life direction and perspective can change with a sense of fulfillment and pride,” adding, “Yeongdeungpo-gu will provide unwavering support so that it can become a new model for nurturing science talents as a prestigious educational city.”
