Yeosu-si Establishes Comprehensive Measures for Red Tide and High Water Temperature... Ensuring Thorough Damage Prevention

Meeting Held for Fishermen in the Woosim Fishing Zone

Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it has established a comprehensive red tide and high water temperature countermeasure plan to minimize damage to aquaculture farms caused by high water temperatures and to ensure rapid recovery in the event of red tide outbreaks, and is making all-out efforts for prevention.

This year, with the El Ni?o phenomenon retreating in summer and the forecast of La Ni?a occurrence, the Tsushima Warm Current has strengthened, resulting in a significant increase in rainfall, and water temperatures are expected to be higher than average. As of the 24th, a high water temperature advisory has been issued for the Yeojaman and Gamakman areas.

The city established a comprehensive red tide and high water temperature countermeasure plan and formed a Red Tide Countermeasure Committee chaired by the vice mayor, strengthening periodic surveillance activities in the red tide inflow sea areas.

In addition, the city has organized and is operating a joint red tide control team consisting of about 200 private steel boats and barges, and has secured 18,971 tons of loess soil and three control purification vessels in advance to ensure prompt response in case of damage.

Meanwhile, from the 25th for two days, a meeting was held together with the Namhae Fisheries Research Institute and Jeollanam-do Marine Science and Technology Institute to provide guidance to about 170 fishermen in the core sea areas of Dolsan-eup, Nam-myeon, Hwajeong-myeon, and Samsan-myeon.

On that day, countermeasures such as aquaculture farm management guidelines according to the crisis alert levels in the event of red tide and high water temperature outbreaks were explained, and opinions from fishermen were collected. They also encouraged enrollment in disaster insurance that can provide compensation in case of damage and early shipment of aquaculture products.

A city official said, “With the issuance of the high water temperature advisory, fishermen’s concerns are deepening,” and added, “Please pay special attention and caution to thoroughly implement aquaculture farm management guidelines so that damage caused by red tide can be minimized.”
