Gwangju Gwangsan-gu Regional Resource Recovery Facility Launches 'Healthy Public Deliberation'

On the 26th, Gwangsan-gu held resident briefings twice, in the morning and afternoon, at the Gwangsan-gu Office and Suwan-dong Administrative Welfare Center regarding the Metropolitan Resource Recovery Facility that Gwangju City is promoting with the goal of operation by 2030.

Previously, Gwangju City reset the site candidate selection process and reopened the call for site applications for the Metropolitan Resource Recovery Facility with the approach of "district application first, then Gwangju City promotion."

Although the facility is essential, the project has faced difficulties due to repetitive and unproductive "pro and con debates." Gwangsan-gu judged that it is paramount for citizens to be sufficiently provided with objective facts and essential information about the Metropolitan Resource Recovery Facility and to properly understand it. Therefore, it was the first among Gwangju’s autonomous districts to hold a resident briefing.

A total of about 350 residents attended the resident briefings held sequentially in Songjeong and Suwan areas on that day.

Gwangsan-gu provided detailed explanations on ▲the necessity of the resource recovery facility ▲Gwangju City’s eco-friendly and resident-friendly facility construction plans ▲domestic and international cases ▲human health and environmental pollution impacts from facility operation ▲benefits (incentives) for nearby residents.

There was also a Q&A session and time to listen to opinions to address citizens’ questions.

Gwangju City is expected to finalize detailed re-application schedules and plans soon. Gwangsan-gu plans to form a special task force (TF team) for responding to the resource recovery facility and to promote strategic social dialogue throughout the site candidate selection process.

Following the regional resident briefings, starting in August, Gwangsan-gu will support mature discussions on the resource recovery facility based on facts and information without bias through neighborhood-level project briefings and advanced site visits to better understand the facility.

Separately, Gwangsan-gu will actively respond to requests from villages, residents, and organizations wishing to hold briefings or case study visits, aiming to enable as many citizens as possible to access accurate facts and information and express their opinions.
