'Policy Discussion Meeting' Held to Review Major Industry Status and Challenges in Gwangju

Park Sugi, Chairperson of Gwangju City Council... Comprehensive Review of Industrial Condition Changes and Response Strategies

A policy discussion meeting was held to review the current status and challenges of major industries in Gwangju Metropolitan City.

Park Sugi, a member of the Gwangju City Council, served as the chair, and Kim Youngjip, director of Technopark, gave a presentation on the topic "Current Status of Gwangju Industry and Development Strategy 2030."

Han Kyungrok, head of the Advanced Industry City Research Office at the Gwangju Institute, presented on "Changes in Conditions and Development Tasks of Gwangju's Strategic Industries," and Kim Youngsoo, senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, spoke on "Growth Engines of Regions in the Era of Industrial Transformation."

Kim Youngjip, who delivered the keynote speech, emphasized that the core values and implementation plans of Development Strategy 2030 should focus on ▲Gwangju leading advanced technology through bold investments to secure a super-gap in leading technologies ▲Gwangju where innovative companies grow through demonstration-based corporate support ▲Gwangju attracting 100,000 creative talents to lead future innovation.

Han Kyungrok, head of the Advanced Industry City Research Office at the Gwangju Institute, identified six core projects that will change Gwangju's future map: ▲Designation of Gwangju Free Economic Zone in the Honam region for the first time in 17 years ▲Selection for the industrial complex renovation project ▲Completion of the Gwangju-type job full vehicle factory, Korea’s first win-win regional job ▲Creation of an AI-centered industrial convergence cluster ▲Establishment of a clean air industry cluster ▲Designation of an energy convergence complex centered on the Nam-gu energy industrial complex.

Kim Youngsoo, senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, evaluated the region's growth potential from an external perspective and proposed future growth engine expansion plans including ▲Enhancement of AI-based technology capabilities ▲Fostering the system semiconductor industry ▲Development of the climate tech industry.

Kim Yongseung, head of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Office of Gwangju City, who moderated the discussion, revealed plans to discover a total of 104 national budget investment projects worth 425.1 billion KRW, focusing on large-scale new projects linked to the 22nd general election pledges and the 8th municipal administration’s policy direction, as well as fostering future growth industries, along with the current status of major industries and next year’s national budget securing strategies.
