On the 18th, SKT announced that it has designated the period from the 22nd of this month to the 31st of next month as a special communication countermeasure period to provide stable service quality.
July and August are times when the number of vacationers visiting major tourist destinations nationwide significantly increases, and communication traffic rises sharply due to large-scale performances and events. Especially this year, with the 33rd Paris Olympics being held, data usage is expected to increase compared to usual years, and roaming demand is also expected to rise significantly due to the increase in foreign tourists.
Accordingly, SKT plans to operate a special communication situation room together with affiliates such as SK Broadband, SK O&S, and Home&Service until the end of next month to focus on managing communication services.
Prior to this special communication countermeasure period, SKT expanded the capacity of 5G and LTE base stations nationwide, focusing on airports, train stations, bus terminals, major tourist spots, downtown areas, shopping malls, and other densely populated areas where mobile communication traffic is expected to increase. Pre-network management has also begun in areas where major performances and events take place during the vacation season.
They have also completed inspections of communication infrastructure to prepare for localized traffic increases, focusing on habitual congestion sections of highways, recreational forests, beaches, resorts, camping sites, and other major tourist destinations.
For users enjoying media indoors or in vehicles during the vacation period, management of various services such as online video services (OTT) like Wavve and navigation services is also being conducted.
SKT expects the first and second weeks of August, when the main matches of the national athletes at the Paris Olympics will take place, to be the periods of highest data usage and will conduct intensive system monitoring during these times.
The number of roaming users is also expected to increase by up to 30% compared to the previous month. In response, SKT has proactively secured additional capacity through collaboration with relay operators where traffic concentration is expected.
Sung Jin-soo, head of SKT Infrastructure Service CT, stated, "We will operate services stably and do our best to manage communication quality to support customers’ comfortable rest and enjoyable journeys during the vacation season."
