Attracting Tourists to Areas with Declining Populations to Revitalize the Local Economy
On the 16th, Yeongcheon City, North Gyeongsang Province, signed an MOU at the 3rd-floor waiting room of Seoul Station to promote railways and tourism in areas experiencing population decline.
The organizations participating in the agreement included 23 basic local governments including Yeongcheon City, as well as the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Korea Railroad Corporation, Korea Tourism Organization, and Korea Rural Community Corporation.
The main purpose of the agreement is to alleviate the travel expenses of tourists visiting population-declining areas by offering discounts on railway fares and regional package products, thereby promoting tourism revitalization.
Going forward, the city plans to develop customized tourism products for Yeongcheon, such as providing incentives to tourists who use tourism taxis in connection with railways.
Mayor Choi Kimoon said, "We will attract tourists through train fare discounts and city-exclusive tourism product discounts, and work to revitalize tourism, restore vitality to areas with declining populations, and contribute to regional economic development."
