Former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate in the United States, was shot during a campaign event, prompting not only the Republican Party but also the Democratic Party to launch an investigation into the White House Secret Service.
On the 14th (local time), according to the Washington Post (WP), Senator Gary Peters (Democrat, Michigan), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced that a separate investigation into the Secret Service would be conducted regarding the assassination attempt on former President Trump that occurred the previous day in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Representative Ruben Gallego (Democrat), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, also sent a letter to Kimberly Cheatle, Director of the Secret Service, requesting detailed information about the agency's plans related to the Butler campaign event, including threat assessments, failures in security planning, and requests for additional resources.
He stated, "This was the highest level of security failure we have seen since the assassination attempt on President Reagan in 1981," adding, "This should never have happened, and I demand accountability."
The mention of the need to investigate the Secret Service's activities by Democratic figures came after Republicans raised the issue of responsibility for the security failure.
Earlier, James Comer (Republican, Kentucky), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, demanded that Director Cheatle appear at a hearing scheduled for the 22nd.
Mark Green (Republican, Tennessee), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, also requested detailed information such as the security plan for the campaign rally where the incident occurred and a briefing from the Secret Service.
Chairman Green expressed "serious concerns about how the shooter was able to access the rooftop within shooting range and direct line of sight to where President Trump was speaking."
