KOSPI Rises Over 1% on Strong Samsung Electronics Earnings... The KOSPI index reached its highest level in 2 years and 6 months, buoyed by the strong performance of Samsung Electronics.


On the 5th, the KOSPI index closed at 2,862.23, up 37.29 points (1.32%) from the previous day. Trading volume was 372.36 million shares, with a trading value of 12.9404 trillion won.


By investor type, institutions and foreigners were net buyers of 1.2563 trillion won and 1.3135 trillion won respectively, while individuals were net sellers of 2.5149 trillion won. Program trading saw net buying of 437.4 billion won in arbitrage trading and 959.8 billion won in non-arbitrage trading.


The New York Stock Exchange was closed the previous day due to Independence Day. On this day, the KOSPI index started slightly higher ahead of Samsung Electronics' earnings announcement. After Samsung Electronics reported earnings exceeding market consensus, it surged more than 2%, lifting the overall index higher as well.


More sectors rose than fell. The distribution sector rose 2.42%, followed by electrical and electronics 2.21%, services 1.78%, electricity and gas 1.62%, pharmaceuticals 1.45%, insurance 1.45%, manufacturing 1.39%, and finance 1.04%. On the other hand, transportation and warehousing fell 1.48%, medical precision -1.47%, chemicals -0.63%, and securities -0.41% declined.


Most of the top market capitalization stocks were strong. Samsung Electronics rose 2.96%, SK Hynix 2.61%, Hyundai Motor 1.26%, Kia 0.56%, Celltrion 1.59%, KB Financial Group 2.68%, and POSCO Holdings 0.53% were all up. Conversely, LG Energy Solution fell 0.42%, and Samsung Biologics closed flat.


The KOSDAQ index also closed higher. The KOSDAQ index ended at 847.49, up 6.68 points (0.79%) from the previous day. By investor type, institutions were net sellers of 14.4 billion won, while foreigners and individuals were net buyers of 38.1 billion won and 8.7 billion won respectively, driving the overall index.


Most of the top market capitalization stocks were strong. EcoPro BM and EcoPro rose 0.58% and 1.34%, Alteogen surged 8.56%, and HLB jumped 13.4%. Samchundang Pharmaceutical rose 8.2%, Celltrion Pharm 2.3%, and Classys 1.82% also showed strength. On the other hand, Enchem fell 2.95%, and Lino Industrial declined 1.35%.


Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate closed at 1,380.7 won, down 0.3 won from the previous day.
