Anseong-si Expands Items of Waste Vinyl Subject to Separate Disposal

Focused Management of Commercial District Area... Operation of Promotion Staff Also Implemented

On the 5th, Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will expand the categories of waste vinyl items subject to separate disposal starting this month to promote recycling of waste.

This decision comes from the assessment that although the use of vinyl has increased due to the rise in food delivery services and one- to two-person households, waste vinyl that is not recycled due to lack of awareness is increasing and being thrown away in volume-based waste bags. In fact, a survey conducted by Anseong City on household waste showed that the proportion of vinyl in incineration volume-based waste bags increased from 15.2% in 2022 to 16.5% in 2023.

Anseong-si Expands Items of Waste Vinyl Subject to Separate Disposal

The city plans to maximize separate disposal of waste vinyl to promote recycling. The city explained that ▲ snack and coffee packaging vinyl ▲ general vinyl bags and cushioning materials ▲ thermal insulation and cooling packs ▲ fruit packaging ▲ plastic twine are included in the separate disposal categories. The city also requested that waste vinyl be separated and disposed of after removing foreign substances, as recycling is possible even if the vinyl is small or contaminated.

The city will particularly focus on commercial areas such as restaurants and convenience stores as key targets for waste vinyl separate disposal and strengthen management. Starting in August, businesses that generate large amounts of waste vinyl will be provided with 40,000 50ℓ waste vinyl exclusive bags to encourage them to collect and dispose of waste vinyl separately in these dedicated bags instead of volume-based waste bags. If exclusive bags are not available, transparent or semi-transparent general vinyl bags can be used for separate disposal.

The city also plans to operate 'Waste Vinyl Separate Disposal Promotion Staff.' These staff members will visit businesses in commercial areas that generate large amounts of waste to inspect the separate disposal status and provide guidance on disposal methods. They will especially focus on educating store owners and building managers on how to properly separate and dispose of waste vinyl.

Kim Bora, Mayor of Anseong City, said, "If waste vinyl is collected separately and disposed of in general bags, it can be utilized as a recyclable resource." She added, "We ask for the citizens’ great interest and cooperation so that discarded waste vinyl can be properly separated and disposed of."
