Handong University GLOCAL University Final Selection Support Process in Full Operation
Mayor Lee Kangduk: "Supporting Pohang to Become a Global Education Hub"
On the 2nd, Pohang City held a meeting in the City Hall's External Cooperation Office to discuss cooperation plans for Handong Global University's final designation as a Glocal University 30 and to specify future action plans and support strategies.
On the 2nd, a discussion on cooperation measures for Handong Global University 30 main designation was held at Pohang City Hall, followed by a commemorative photo session.
On this day, Mayor Lee Kangdeok, together with Handong Global University President Choi Doseong, Vice President Park Hyekyung, and heads of departments related to the Glocal University action plan, explored ways to collaborate and expressed their strong commitment to Handong Global University's final selection.
Glocal University 30 is a government project that selects universities with global competitiveness to break down internal and external barriers, foster partnerships with local communities and industries, and drive co-growth between regions and universities. Selected universities receive 100 billion KRW in national funding over five years.
Last year, Pohang City was the only basic local government to have both POSTECH and Handong Global University receive preliminary designation as Glocal Universities. However, only POSTECH was ultimately selected for final designation, while Handong Global University is making its second attempt this year after regaining preliminary qualification.
Handong Global University plans to submit its action plan for final designation to the Ministry of Education by the 26th, with the evaluation and selection process scheduled for late August to September.
On this day, Pohang City discussed various support measures, including establishing an organic communication system to support Handong Global University's final selection for Glocal University designation. The city also announced plans to change the name of the 'Youth Employment Team' to the 'University Youth Employment Team' in the recent organizational restructuring to provide more integrated support for universities.
Since last year, the city has operated an 'Action Plan Drafting Task Force Team' composed of relevant departments in accordance with the Glocal University innovation planning project. It has also formed a public-private-industry-academia cooperation promotion group with Gyeongbuk Province, Uljin, Yeongdeok, Ulleung counties, POSTECH, EcoproBM, the Pohang branch of the Bank of Korea, and other local institutions, universities, and industries to provide comprehensive support.
For this Glocal University selection, Handong Global University has presented the vision of a “Global HI (Holistic Intelligence) Platform: Educating for the Future, Changing the World.”
Specifically, the university aims to overcome the shared crisis of the region and the university and achieve sustainable co-growth through key strategies such as: ▲‘Global HI Core’ for realizing the future university education model ▲‘Global HI Network’ for spreading achievements through global alliances ▲‘Global HI Accelerator’ for regional innovation based on global cooperation.
In particular, Handong Global University plans to establish a Global Corporate Innovation Park within its campus to build a secondary battery cluster and, through the East Sea Regional Innovation Center scheduled to open in mid-month, contribute to solving regional issues. The university also plans to fully support lifelong education for local residents and the globalization of Pohang, establishing a leading cooperation system between the university and the region.
President Choi Doseong of Handong Global University stated, “We will ensure selection for the Glocal University project and establish a bridgehead for the co-growth of Pohang City and Handong Global University. Through innovative education and research, we will nurture global talent, contribute to the sustainable development of the local community, and strengthen cooperation with Pohang City, local universities, and companies to establish a new model of regional-industry-academia cooperation.”
Mayor Lee Kangdeok said, “Since Handong Global University's Glocal University designation can help prevent regional extinction, we will unite all our capabilities with local institutions, organizations, and industries. If POSTECH's advanced research and technology development capabilities are combined with Handong Global University's capacity for nurturing global talent, Pohang can become a hub for technological innovation and global education.”
